Image Taking Hubs

Image Taking Hubs are dedicated clinics where patients have high-quality clinical images taken of their skin conditions. The aim of the service is to reduce patient waiting times for dermatology assessments, and reduce unnecessary patient attendance at the hospital.

If you are being seen in this service, your GP has identified symptoms or skin changes that warrant specialist review; however, it is important to note that most people referred through this pathway do not have skin cancer.

Our Image Taking Hub clinics take place on the following days at the following locations:

Tuesday- Hope House Surgery
Wednesday- Chew Valley Medical Practice
Thursday- Newbridge Surgery
Friday- Sulis Manor Road Surgery (Odd Down)

If your GP places you under the care of this serivice, a member of your practice team will contact you to arrange a referral to a photography hub near you. You will be invited to an appointment where a healthcare professional will take specific and detailed photographs of the lesion(s) of concern with a specialist camera.

Photographs of the lesion(s) will then be assessed by a consultant dermatologist from the skin cancer service. You and your GP will be notified of the outcome of this assessment within 14 days from your photography appointment. This will be by post, or by email if you consent to this form of communication. The report should be visible on your NHS app soon after.

Once you have had photographs taken, you will not need to attend a hospital appointment unless you are notified directly by the Royal United Hospitals team.

A member of the BEMS admin team will contact you and you will be invited to an appointment where a healthcare professional will take specific and detailed photographs of the lesion(s) of concern with a specialist camera.

Please be available to attend appointments, investigations, or treatment at short notice to prevent delays in your care. If you are employed, please be prepared to take time off. It is useful for you to bring details of your medication to the appointment. Please consider clothing that is easy to remove and show the area of concern for your assessment.

If your lesion(s) have scale or a scab over to the top please apply Vaseline twice daily after washing the area to help to soften and lift the dead skin whilst you’re awaiting or photographs.

Please avoid wearing make up on the day of your photographs as it can obscure the images.

Only photographs of the lesion(s) noted by your GP will be taken and sent for review. If you have other skin concerns /a new skin lesion you need to make a GP appointment as this will not be detailed on the referral information.
